What is R&D Tax Relief

Research and Development (R&D) tax credits in the UK are a government incentive designed to encourage investment in innovation by businesses. These tax credits aim to reward companies that are engaged in qualifying R&D activities by providing them with either a reduction in their tax bill or a cash payment.

There are two main types of R&D tax credits available in the UK:

Contact Title
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) For companies with less than 500 employees and an annual turnover not exceeding €100 million or a balance sheet total not exceeding €86 million. SMEs can claim a tax credit of up to 33% of their qualifying R&D expenditure.
Contact Title
Research and Development Expenditure Credit (RDEC): This scheme is for larger companies and qualifying SMEs that are subcontractors. RDEC provides a taxable credit calculated as a percentage of a company's qualifying R&D expenditure.

What costs qualify
for R&D tax credits?

  • Employee Costs: Covering gross pay, employer’s National Insurance Contributions (NIC), and pension contributions for staff actively engaged in R&D.
  • Materials and Consumables: Encompassing expenses for materials, prototype development, and consumables directly used in R&D projects.
  • Software Expenditure: Including costs for software licenses and tools directly utilized for R&D purposes.
  • Third-party Expenditure: Involving costs for outsourced research, consultancy services, and subcontractor fees related to R&D projects.
  • Utilities and Facilities: Incorporating expenses for utilities, rent, and facilities associated with R&D spaces or dedicated facilities.
  • Clinical Trial Expenses: Covering costs for designing, conducting, and analyzing clinical trials as part of R&D projects.
  • Patent and Intellectual Property Costs: Including expenses for patent applications, attorney fees, and intellectual property protection arising from R&D efforts.
  • Testing and Certification: Encompassing expenses for testing, compliance, and certification activities necessary for validating R&D outcomes and meeting regulatory standards.
  • Training and Development: Involving costs for employee training and skills development directly relevant to R&D roles and projects.
